EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

A Powerful Approach to Healing Trauma and Emotional WoundsAt Katz Psychological Services, we offer EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) as part of our customized care for clients navigating trauma, anxiety, and other emotional challenges. EMDR is an evidence-based, integrative therapy that helps people process and heal from disturbing life experiences—often faster and more effectively than traditional talk therapy alone.

01

What Is EMDR?

EMDR is a structured therapy that helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories so they no longer feel distressing or stuck. Instead of talking in detail about the trauma, EMDR focuses on how your brain stores those memories and helps you reprocess them in a way that reduces emotional intensity.

Originally developed to treat PTSD, EMDR has also proven highly effective for:

  • Anxiety and panic attacks

  • Depression

  • Grief and loss

  • Phobias

  • Childhood trauma

  • Performance anxiety

  • Attachment and relationship wounds

  • Medical trauma

  • And more

02

How Does EMDR Work?

When something traumatic or overwhelming happens, the brain sometimes doesn’t process the experience fully. These “stuck” memories can lead to emotional distress, triggers, or physical symptoms. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, tapping, or sounds) while you briefly recall the distressing memory. This allows your brain to reprocess the memory in a healthier way—reducing its emotional charge and helping you move forward.

03

What Does an EMDR Session Look Like?

EMDR doesn’t require you to retell every detail of your trauma. Instead, your therapist will guide you through a structured process that includes:

  • History and preparation: We’ll build trust, explore your history, and ensure EMDR is a good fit for you.

  • Identifying target memories: We’ll choose specific experiences to process.

  • Desensitization: Using bilateral stimulation, we’ll help your brain reprocess the memory so it feels less overwhelming.

  • Installation and closure: You’ll leave each session feeling grounded and supported, with positive beliefs reinforced.

04

Why Clients Choose EMDR

  • It works. Many people experience lasting relief after just a few sessions.

  • It’s empowering. You don’t have to relive the trauma to heal from it.

  • It’s efficient. EMDR can often lead to faster progress than traditional therapy alone.
